Venus Transit 2012

It was a perfect day at Riverland Dingo Observatory to watch Venus's 2012 transit across the sun. We could not have asked for more favourable conditions on site.

The 6th June 2012 made the historical day of the Venus transit. In brief, there is no known sighting of this transit in recorded history until the British Cleric, Jeremiah Horrocks and his friend William Crabtree spotted it on December 4, 1639, and that is only because Horrocks had mathematically predicted this transit using better data than Kepler had used. For more interesting details check out Venus transit history, it's a great site. The transit lasted a little over 6hrs and was a fantastic experience. The next Venus transit will be 11th December 2117, so keep that date free .

      Sunset at Riverland Dingo Observatory.

IC 4628 is a spectacular and bright emission nebula in sourthern skies. It is located in the tail of Scorpius (16hr 57min, -40deg 20 min) not too far away from Antares. It is also known as the Prawn Nebula, or Gum 56. It is 6,000 light years distant and about 250 light years across. The two bright emission regions appear to be teathered by a connecting dark dust lane.

Data from 5 nm Astrodon H-a nad SII filters and a 3 nm OIII filter were color mapped to green, red and blue, respectively (Hubble color palette). RGB data from Astrodon Generation 2 filters were blended in for star colors. The field is ~ 40' wide. North is toward the lower right.
